Creative Spotlight — Jessica Tiao
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Jessica “JT” Tiao, a UX and product designer at Kissmetrics. Thanks to her excellent design advice, I wanted to share the short-and-sweet version with #AllTheDesigners.
If you are a designer looking to share your work in new, creative ways, consider elevating your personal content strategy to a new level.
“If you have a blog or news site that you like in particular, consider reaching out to them and offer to write for them.” — Jessica Tiao
JT recommends finding a good outlet like Medium or a personal portfolio to blog about design trends. By writing blogposts and sharing visuals, you can effectively show the outside world what you are paying attention to and how your design thinking process is evolving.
Don’t just take it from me. JT’s company, Kissmetrics, wrote an excellent “Marketer’s Guide” to Medium, as an example of the importance of blogging:
“One thing is certain: Medium upends how we think about personal publishing online. It has its roots in traditional blogging but breaks a lot of rules — kind of like a rebellious, super-smart younger sibling.” — The Kissmetrics Blog
Blogging or writing for a design publication like UX Design Weekly is also a great way to cross promote your ideas and help potential employers or recruiters notice you.
Having a strong content strategy takes extra time upfront, but is a good way to learn and grow as a designer. A solid content strategy also helps increase inbound messages from potential design jobs, so really is a win-win for designers.
To JT — A big thanks for sharing your thoughts on design. It was great meeting you and I look forward to our paths crossing again soon.
